Demonstration Alert- El Salvador December 11, 2020

Location: Throughout the country

Event: The 2021 Legislative and Municipal Election Campaign officially begins in El Salvador on December 27th with Election Day on February 28, 2021. Previous campaign seasons have generated demonstrations that block roads and require a police presence. Demonstrations can occur prior to the beginning of the official campaign season. While the vast majority of such demonstrations do not result in violence or specific actions against U.S. citizens, demonstrations are by their nature unpredictable and constitute an elevated risk to safety.

Actions to take:

  • Stay tuned to local media for reports on any demonstrations, but also be aware that they can start without advance notice;
  • Stay alert and avoid any area where demonstrations are taking place. If one develops spontaneously near you, leave the area immediately;
  • If you are driving and a demonstration is blocking a road you are on, do not attempt to run or break the blockade; instead seek alternate routes.
