MCC, through FOMILENIO II, invests over $2 million in construction of educational center on Zacatillo Island


With an investment of more than $2.06 million, MCC, through its implementing partner FOMILENIO II, launched the construction and rehabilitation of the Education Center located in “Caserío La Estufa Cantón Isla Zacatillo in La Unión. This new school will benefit 318 students from 4 educational centers that make up the educational school system in the municipality. In addition, it will offer a new Integrated Full Time Inclusive School Model and open a general high school program with a new curriculum in Adventure Tourism. 

With the creation of the high school degree, the education center was upgraded from a school to an educational complex, which expands educational opportunities for students in the municipality. The Adventure Tourism curriculum was developed to take advantage of local resources to develop the economy, and is currently attended by 12 students. The integrated educational complex on El Zacatillo Island includes the Caserío La Estufa Educational Complex, Caserío La Playona School Center, Caserío Playitas School Center and the Caserío El Cahuano School Center.

The intervention includes the remodeling of 4 classrooms and the construction of 8 new classrooms, innovation center, office, teacher’s lounge, covered courtyard, sanitary services, dining room, kitchen, cellar, villa, and a boardroom, among others. The work will generate around 60 direct jobs.

78 teachers have also been trained to strengthen the teaching of English, science, social studies and mathematics. Teacher training is essential to improve the quality of education in El Salvador, based on the premise that a better trained teacher uses best practices in teaching students. The support also includes improvements in curricula and the provision of computer equipment to facilitate classroom teaching and learning. In the Zacatillo Island System, 1 new library and 2 innovation centers have been equipped. In addition, 21 electronic readers, 68 tablets and computers have been delivered.

FOMILENIO II is investing $100.2 million to promote this modern educational model and with high quality standards, through teacher training, improvement in curricula, construction of educational infrastructure, and the provision of equipment and teaching materials.
