Political Counselor

Elias Baumann is the Political Counselor at U.S. Embassy San Salvador. He joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 2002, and previously served as Acting Deputy Chief of Mission and Management Counselor at U.S. Embassy Panama, where he coordinated 29 U.S. government agencies’ activities to meet interagency goals. He was also a Post Management Officer in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, where he participated in bilateral negotiations to re-establish diplomatic relations and re-open the US Embassy in Cuba. Other overseas assignments include Lima, Zagreb, Baku, and Port of Spain. He is fluent in Spanish, and also speaks some Croatian and Russian.

Before joining the Foreign Service, Mr. Baumann was an economic development Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras and a business consultant with the multinational company Asea Brown Boveri.

Mr. Baumann holds a B.S. in Management from Tulane University and an M.B.A from Thunderbird. He is an avid sports enthusiast and enjoys travelling with his wife, Grecia, and their three children.
