September 11 was a tragic day that shook the United States and the world.

A day in which the lives of all the people who believe in democracy changed forever. A day in which nearly three thousand women, men and children lost their lives in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Today we also remember the two Salvadorans who lost their lives that day too. Ana Gloria Pocasangre and Elsy Carolina Osorio.

During this unprecedented tragedy, hundreds of people ran towards danger to help. During those early moments of uncertainty and chaos, firefighters, police officers and civilians worked day and night in an effort to save lives.

Now, 19 years later, we remember our patriots who lost their lives that day, and we commemorate the courage and commitment of these brave citizens, firefighters, police officers and paramedics who responded heroically.

It is an honor to be able to join you in this ceremony in memory of your American colleagues, because you are heroes with the sole objective of saving lives, of protecting the weak, the injured and the vulnerable.

There are many ways in which we can serve our countries, something that has become evident today more than ever. Men and women from around the world are coming together to face the threat of the pandemic and we have once again seen our best qualities come forward.

Your commitment, altruistic and selfless, is an exceptional quality that we can all aspire to every day.
