Secretary Kirstjen M. Nielsen to Travel to San Salvador, El Salvador
WASHINGTON – Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen will travel to San Salvador, El Salvador to attend a meeting of her Northern Triangle Security Minister counterparts – Guatemalan Minister of Government Enrique Degenhart, Honduran Security Minister Julian Pacheco, and Salvadoran Minister of Justice and Public Security Mauricio Landaverde to discuss migration and security issues in the region.
Tomorrow’s meeting marks an important milestone in the Secretary’s work with Northern Triangle leaders—who she has engaged with regularly—and is part of a concerted campaign to step up cooperation in the region to bolster border security, target human smuggling and trafficking organizations, prevent the formation of new migrant caravans, and address the root causes of the migration crisis. Discussions will focus on developing a joint action plan to address the situation and to take bold steps on information sharing, public messaging, and security cooperation in order to ensure migrants receive protection closer to home rather than making the dangerous journey north.
DHS has a strong partnership with the Northern Triangle countries – rooted in a shared commitment to achieve a stable and secure Central America and the safety and security of our people.
