The United States Embassy Supports Prison Centers to Control COVID-19 Infection

On June 3 the United States Embassy donated 157 hospital mattresses to the Prisons General Directory through the Embassy’s Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL).

The mattresses delivered this week by INL personnel to officials at the Esperanza Prison Center is only the first part of a total of 500 mattresses that will be donated. This support, which is valued at $153,460, will also include 250 bunk beds that are already in process of being purchased.

This donation further demonstrates the United State’s commitment in supporting efforts by different institutions of the Government of El Salvador to flatten the curve of COVID-19 cases.

This donation also supports the efforts of the Prisons General Directory to control COVID-19 positive cases among inmates who are in the prison system, and to reduce the spread of the virus within the prisons population.

This is the first batch of a larger donation in support of the Prisons General Directorate’s strategy on reducing the overall statistical curve of cases. INL plans to provide additional support to Prison Centers to help reduce the spread of this pandemic.
