The United States Embassy in San Salvador has consular jurisdiction for all of El Salvador.

The U. S. Embassy in San Salvador has compiled the following list of health care providers.  The majority have had training overseas, are familiar with U.S. medical care, and have a reasonable command of English.

The list is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive nor does it represent either a guarantee of competence or endorsement by the Department of State or the U.S. Embassy.  It does indicate that the Embassy Community has utilized them in the past.  Retention on this list depends upon a combination of factors including availability, training, and positive assistance in previous consultations, etc.

Medical care is limited.  Emergency services, even in San Salvador, are very basic.  State-funded ambulance services are not staffed by well-trained personnel and sometimes lack life-saving necessities.  Physicians in the major hospitals are generally well-trained, often in U.S. hospitals, but nursing and support staff is not up to U.S. standards. State-of-the-art technology for dealing with medical problems requiring hospitalization and/or medical evacuation to the United States can cost thousands of dollars. Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services. Most hospitals accept credit cards for hospital charges, but not for doctors’ fees.  We encourage you to check the Department of State website for information about El Salvador.

When dialing from the U.S., please dial 011-503 for all telephone and fax numbers provided below.  El Salvador is a Spanish-speaking country; therefore please do not expect people at clinics, laboratories, etc. to provide bilingual services even in an emergency situation.
