Photo Requirements and Resources for U.S. Passports

Each applicant, including children and infants, must submit one recent (taken in the last six months) color photograph that provides a full front view of the applicant’s face against a plain light background. Photographs for a U.S. passport application must meet the following standards:
•The photographs must be 2”x2” inches (5×5 cm) in size.
•The image size measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head (including hair) must be no less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) and no more than 1 3/8 (3.5cm).
•Photographs must be front view, full face and printed on thin non-glossy paper with light, plain background.
•Photographs taken in front of busy, patterned, or dark backgrounds will not be accepted.
The American Citizen Services Unit of the U.S. Embassy would like to emphasize the importance of the quality of the photograph submitted. Photos may be obtained at the canopied area near the visa entrance of the Embassy or from commercial photo shops. The cost for photos is not controlled by the Embassy but typically is between seven and eight dollars.
