Notification to U.S. citizens resident in or traveling to El Salvador:
On March 27, 2022 the Government of El Salvador enacted an emergency decree that suspended the constitutional rights and guarantees regulated by Articles 7, 12.2, 13.2, and 24, in relation to Article 131.27, and Article 29 of the Constitution of the Republic, which refer to:
- Freedom of association
- The right to be immediately informed of the reason for detention
- The right to have a defense attorney during initial investigations
- Extends administrative detentions from three to 15 days
- The right to private communications
This suspension is for a period of 30 days and is renewable. Please monitor local news sources for more information and follow all published legal guidance.
